Assistant Attorney General – Human Services Division (DOC)
The Office of Vermont Attorney General, Human Services Division, has an immediate opening for a full-time Assistant Attorney General to provide defense litigation services for the Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC). The job requires at least 3 years of relevant legal experience.
The DOC Litigation Team defends the DOC, DOC employees or the State of Vermont in civil actions, habeas corpus petitions, administrative actions and other miscellaneous court actions. The attorneys represent DOC in all state civil courts, including small claims courts, federal courts and occasionally state criminal courts conducting all aspects of litigation including discovery, motion and trial practice, and appeals. Attorneys also provide legal advice on other DOC issues including sentence computation, contracts, grants, MOUs and various interstate and regional compact agreements.
The Unit consists of four Assistant Attorneys General and an Administrative Assistant. This AAG position is an exempt full-time position. Salary will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. Candidates with litigation experience, preferably civil, are encouraged to apply. Candidates must possess excellent research, writing, and courtroom presentation skills.
Candidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
