In a letter to the Vermont Legal Community on August 20th, Attorney General T.J. Donovan announced the 3rd Annual Lawyers Fighting Hunger Food Drive, in partnership with the Vermont Bar Association, and the Vermont Foodbank. This year’s food drive will run for two weeks, beginning September 9th and ending on the 20th. September is Hunger Action Month in Vermont.
“As a member of the Vermont legal community, I believe we have a duty to help those in need when we can,” said Attorney General Donovan in his letter announcing the food drive. “I hope that your law firm or office will join my Office, the Vermont Foodbank, and the Vermont Bar Association to make the 3rd Annual Lawyers Fighting Hunger Food Drive a success. Together we can help make sure that no one in our state needs to go hungry.”
Studies by the Vermont Foodbank and Feeding America show that one in four Vermonters turn to food shelves and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families. That’s around 153,000 of our neighbors, community members, and friends, and an estimated 33,900 children and 26,010 seniors.
The first two years of the Lawyers Fighting Hunger Food Drive have been a tremendous success. In those two years, Vermont lawyers raised over $28,000 and collected over 7,000 food items that went directly to the Vermont Foodbank to help those who need it most. Nearly 50 Vermont law firms and offices have participated in prior years by hosting two-week food drives.
Vermont law offices, firms, and solo practices that are interested in participating in this year’s Lawyers Fighting Hunger Food Drive should return the form provided at the end of the Attorney General Donovan’s letter by e-mail to Kim.Ingraham@vermont.gov no later than September 6th. Only one form needs to be returned for each participating law firm or office.
More announcements will be issued as we get closer to the start of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Fighting Hunger Food Drive on the Attorney General’s Office website and social media using the hashtag #VTLegalFoodDrive.
