The Attorney General’s Office seeks a motivated and creative individual to serve as Legislative and Policy Intern during the spring 2025 semester. This position will involve direct interaction with the Attorney General, legislators and other statewide policy makers. This intern will spend 10-20 hours/week on this internship, from January into May (actual hours flexible depending on course schedules and whether the candidate is seeking academic credit). Elements of the internship can be performed remotely, but some work will require in-person attendance at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier, likely one or two days a week. The intern will report to the Attorney General’s Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs.
The core goal of the internship is to learn about the Vermont legislative process through direct, hands-on experience. This work will include attending and reporting on legislative hearings (in-person and remote), tracking and developing reports on the progress of policy initiatives and specific pieces of legislation, attending policy meetings, assisting in scheduling testimony before legislative committees, and developing legislative talking points. Other work could include reviewing draft legislation, briefing the Attorney General or members of her staff on the progress of legislation, drafting correspondence to legislators, and outreach to constituents and stakeholders.
Candidates should have a strong interest in policy work, particularly as it relates to the Attorney General’s main areas of focus: consumer and environmental protection, civil rights, and criminal and restorative justice. Strong communication and presentation skills, attention to detail, and a problem-solving mindset are also important. Ideally, the intern would be currently pursuing a degree (BA, MA or JD) in Political Science/Politics, Public Administration, Policy, Law/Pre-law, or a similar field.
Experience in legislative affairs, drafting statutes, or policy negotiation is not required; an interest in learning is.
The AGO supports the policy intern’s pursuit of course credit for this internship. This is an unpaid internship. Please send a resume and cover letter to AGO.Info@vermont.gov and include “Policy Intern” in the subject line. The deadline to apply is December 6, 2024.
