The Appellate Unit consists of the Solicitor General and a Deputy Solicitor General. The Unit manages the AGO’s appellate work with the goal of ensuring consistent, high-quality representation of the State in the Vermont Supreme Court, federal appellate courts, and U.S. Supreme Court. Members of the Unit handle appeals, supervise the appellate work of all AAGs, and co-counsel significant trial-court litigation. The Unit may handle legislative matters as directed by the Attorney General. It also consults on significant legal issues, including claims under the State and Federal Constitutions, claims that state statutes are preempted or otherwise invalid, and other major litigation. The Unit also oversees the Office’s participation in amicus curiae briefs at the U.S. Supreme Court and other state and federal courts.
